On 19 August the desk set a clean test for this position: a close above 27,800 in the Composite alongside a still-extending Nasdaq Mini futures short would mark a forced-seller squeeze. Covering while the Composite stayed below that level would fail the exposure-against-the-tape read outright. Neither leg fired cleanly. The Composite has not traded above 27,800; it sits at 27,213.8. But the futures book is covering, not extending, for a second straight report. That combination fell into the gap between the two outcomes the desk defined, and the 24 August note had already flagged this exact risk when it called the prior squeeze read broken by August's covering against a falling tape.#
This time the tape has flipped. In the week to 25 August, the Nasdaq Mini short covered while the Composite fell 2.19% over five sessions, the mismatch that broke the forced-seller thesis on 24 August. In the week to 15 September, the same book covered again, 25,064 contracts, while the Composite has since risen 4.74% over five sessions to a fresh high. Covering into strength is the ordinary case: a crowded short gets squeezed as price moves against it, and the short reduces. The position that looked offside against a falling market in August now looks offside against a rising one in September. That is a more conventional short-covering dynamic, not a fresh anomaly.#
A short that covers as price falls is a broken thesis; a short that covers as price rises is just a short losing money, which is the ordinary mechanism, not a new signal.#
What has not resolved is the stretch itself. The Nasdaq Mini net short sits at the 91st percentile of its own three-year range, with a three-year z-score of 1.47, even after two consecutive weeks of covering. Open interest in that book puts the position at the very bottom of its own one-year range by the Williams measure, a net short close to the largest it has been all year even as it shrinks week over week. Whoever remains on that side of the trade is not merely leaning against a rally. They are leaning against one from a position that started at a three-year extreme and has already given up two reporting periods' worth of size. The E-Mini S&P 500 book tells a similar story: its net short also covered, 45,959 contracts, and still sits at the 83rd percentile of its own three-year range. Both index books are unwinding from stretched levels into a tape that keeps making new highs, which narrows the room for the short side to add back without a genuine reversal in price first.#
The options market is not corroborating stress. The vol regime here shows a market in contango, the calmer carry state, with the VIX at the 31st percentile of its own history and a 3-month-to-VIX ratio of 1.23. Skew sits at the 95th percentile, so crash protection is still bid even as realized volatility stays low, a gap between hedging demand and current calm worth watching but not itself evidence the Nasdaq short is being forced out in a disorderly way. Set against that calm backdrop sit two single-name pressures on the sector this desk covers: Microsoft's fresh round of roughly 500 layoffs reported by Business Insider, and one wire's warning that a power shortage could complicate Nvidia's third-quarter results. Neither confirms the other; the index-level squeeze mechanics and the single-name fundamental picture are simply two different stories running at once.#
The 19 August test is not fully settled and will not be until one of its two conditions actually fires. The Composite has not cleared 27,800; the short has not resumed extending. What is now measurable is different: covering has occurred for two straight reports against a rising tape, the more conventional outcome for a crowded short under pressure, while the position's percentile stretch has barely moved off its three-year extreme. The desk is watching whether covering keeps shrinking that percentile over the next report, or whether it stalls with the short still near its year's largest size, in which case the position remains vulnerable to a further squeeze if the Composite does eventually test 27,800.#
