This fiscal mechanism is familiar to readers of this desk. The deficit has been reaching into bank balance sheets through the windfall and asset-tax regime since the government widened its scope. What the 19 October report adds is scale: income tax up 45 percent against profits down 12 percent. The tax bill is now growing several multiples faster than the earnings it is levied on.#
Set that against the tape. WIG-BANKI rose 1.09% on 16 October 2026, a session that lifted the broader WIG 1.03% and WIG20 0.92% the same day. Banks were not an outlier in a rising market. The five-session comparison is the sharper tell. WIG-BANKI is up just 0.12% since 12 October 2026, trailing WIG's 0.87% and WIG20's 0.90% over the identical window. The sector rode one session higher without confirming the broader index's short-run trend.#
Valuations explain why that gap looks tolerable rather than alarming. PKOBP trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 13.5 with a dividend yield of 5.2%, Pekao at 10.8 with a 7.4% yield, Erste Bank Polska at 13.4 with a 6.4% yield, and mBank at 15.7. None of these multiples price distress. A sector absorbing a 45 percent tax increase while still trading on high-single-digit to mid-teens earnings multiples, with dividend yields above 5 percent, is a sector the market still expects to post a record result despite the levy. The 19 October report itself notes analysts anticipate exactly that.#
Warsaw's bank valuations are pricing the tax burden as a drag on growth, not a threat to the dividend.#
That reading rests on the reference rate holding where it is. The NBP reference rate has stood at 3.75% since the March 2026 cut. Net interest income at that level is still large enough to absorb a heavier tax bill without forcing a cut to payout ratios. A further cut would shrink the spread banks earn on deposits just as the tax burden keeps climbing. The two pressures would compound rather than offset, and the valuations now treating the tax as cosmetic would have to reprice. The 19 October employment and wages release and the 20 October industrial output print carry no rate signal themselves. Any RPP commentary that follows them is the next point where this reading gets tested.#
