A profit decline beating a beaten-down bar is not the same evidence as the margin expansion mBank reported. mBank's third-quarter net profit rose to PLN 1,085 million, a record; Pekao's fell even as it cleared what one wire frames as the expected level. Both are true at once, and they are not telling the same story about the sector's trajectory.#

Pekao still trades at a price-to-earnings ratio of 10.8 and a price-to-book ratio of 2.13, against mBank's 16.6 and 2.7. PKO BP, which has not yet reported, sits at 13.4 and 2.6. The valuation gap this desk flagged on 28 October, that the sector trades cheaper than its best-performing member despite the rally, has not closed; if anything, a declining Pekao profit number argues the gap reflects something more than market inattention.#

Pekao's 20% profit fall landing two sessions after a 3.11% WIG-BANKI rally is the first concrete data point testing whether that rally was a single-name story dressed as a sector move.#

The mechanism that matters here runs on a slower clock than one earnings print. A bank's net interest margin responds to the policy rate over a reporting cycle, not a single quarter; the NBP reference rate has stood at 3.75% since the 5 March 2026 cut, and the Council's next decision lands 4 November 2026. If Pekao's profit decline reflects a margin squeeze that predates any rate move, the rally in WIG-BANKI priced a mBank-specific result before the sector-wide picture caught up. Pekao's 7.4% dividend yield, the highest among the three reporting WIG20 banks' remaining 2026 prints, is one reason the stock still draws buyers even on a down quarter; it does not resolve whether the sector's margin trajectory is improving or merely less bad than feared.#

PKO BP has yet to report. The desk raised on 28 October whether the sector's margin story looks like mBank's, or like Pekao's. A PKO BP print showing profit growth and margin expansion in line with mBank's would confirm the sector-wide reading the rally assumed; a decline echoing Pekao's would suggest the WIG-BANKI move overstated how broadly the record quarter travelled. That report, alongside the 30 October CPI flash estimate and the 4 November NBP rate decision, is what the desk is watching next.#
