WTI crude is down 2.51% on the session, trading at 100.2 so far on 29 October 2026. Brent crude is weaker still, at 109.48, down 5.06% intraday and down 3.26% over five sessions. That is a steeper retreat than WTI's own 0.73% five-day gain. The one-month picture inverts it: WTI is up 10.82% over the trailing month against Brent's 5.75%. The two grades are not moving together, and the split predates 29 October. The desk's 22 October note already flagged WTI's net long extending while Brent's shrank.#
The positioning data behind that split comes from the 13 October Commitments of Traders report, the most recent available. It cannot speak to the sixteen days since, but it is unambiguous on direction. WTI's managed-money net long rose to 7,854 contracts, up 710 on the week, sitting at the 99.2 mark on the Williams COT index over the past 52 weeks and the 99.4th percentile of its three-year range. Brent's equivalent book moved the other way: net long fell to 1,427 contracts, down 984 on the week, with its 52-week COT index reading zero, the smallest Brent net long of the year. One grade's speculative crowd is at its most stretched long in three years. The other's is near its least.#
The 12 October falsifier was explicit: further extension of the WTI net long into weakness would mean the crowd is doubling down, and the reading weakens.#
That is what the 13 October data shows happened. The reading does not survive as stated. A book already at a three-year extreme added to itself in the same week the demand-cut narrative the 12 October note cited was circulating. WTI has since diverged further from Brent on the tape, with Brent now absorbing the sharper session-level selloff. The positioning behind WTI remains crowded on one side; the price move since has not validated that crowd.#
None of the three Iran-related headlines over 28 and 29 October moved WTI by more than noise. Vance's outreach to an Iranian security official drew a 0.56% move against a typical 60-minute move of 0.27%, the only one of the three outsized; a Qatari-mediated draft deal and a separate Vance engagement both registered within normal range. The diplomacy is live but has not repriced the war premium cleanly. Brent crude futures were quoted retreating to $114.00 a barrel on one wire's account of Thursday trading, even as the desk's own tape shows Brent trading lower by the 29 October session. The two grades are moving apart within the same news flow.#
The three-week gap matters for how much weight this positioning snapshot can carry. The 13 October report describes a crowd's decision taken before the session-level Brent selloff now visible in the tape; it cannot describe what that same crowd has done since. What it does establish is that going into this divergence, WTI's speculative long was not trimming into any sign of trouble. It was adding. Whether that long has since been forced to unwind is the open question, and it stays untestable until the next Commitments of Traders report, covering the week to 20 October 2026, is released.#
