On 9 October 2026 the desk's prior note argued that gross short covering of 11,267 contracts in the week to 22 September, against a net short that barely moved, left a position at the 71st percentile of its three-year range. That position was exposed either to a resumed squeeze or to a reversal on fresh demand concerns. The falsifier was explicit: if gross shorts resumed building and the net short rose in the report covering the week to 6 October, the squeeze mechanism would break in favor of the demand-concern narrative. The intervening report, covering 6 October, is not separately available here. What the pack carries is the subsequent report, dated 13 October, and it shows the net short falling further, from roughly 14,293 contracts implied by the prior week's change to 7,287. That is covering, not a reversal. The 9 October falsifier was not triggered on this evidence. The thesis survives this test, provisionally.#

Provisionally matters because the shape of the move has changed. In the 22 September report, covering ran mainly on the short side, consistent with a squeeze: shorts buying back into a rallying tape. In the week to 13 October, both legs retreated, longs down 3,831 contracts and shorts down a larger 10,837. A book-wide reduction in gross size is also exactly what de-grossing ahead of a dense catalyst calendar looks like. The Federal Funds Rate decision lands 28 October, forecast at 4.00% against a previous 4.00%. The Core PCE Price Index print follows 29 October, forecast at 0.3% month over month against 0.2% previously. Chip earnings are due from Korea's majors this week too, flagged by the KOSPI's 1.46% fall to 5,469.47 on caution ahead of that calendar. A speculator trimming exposure into three live catalysts needs no conviction about Nasdaq direction at all.#

A net short covering for a second straight report while the Nasdaq Composite falls 2.94% over the trailing month is consistent with either a squeeze unwinding into strength or plain de-grossing ahead of the Fed, GDP and PCE prints, and the 13 October data cannot distinguish the two.#

The tape itself sits on the fence. The Nasdaq Composite trades at 26,271.85, up 1.22% so far on 26 October 2026. Yet it remains down 2.94% over the past month and down 0.6% over five sessions. A position at the 87th percentile of its own three-year range per the 13 October report is still a stretched short by the standard the desk used on 9 October. The mechanism that would make this matter is unchanged. If the gross short base keeps shrinking into a rallying Composite, the remaining shorts face a thinner crowd and a sharper squeeze risk each week the index holds its recent low. But that mechanism requires the Composite to actually hold or extend its gain. A failed bounce into the Fed decision would read as confirmation of de-grossing, not squeeze exhaustion, and the two readings would again be hard to separate from positioning data alone.#

What would resolve this: a further net short increase in the report covering the week to 20 October, against a Composite that is still rising, would support the squeeze read directly. Covering into strength with no offsetting catalyst-driven de-grossing is the cleaner signature. Conversely, if gross shorts resume building in the report covering the week to 20 October, after the Federal Funds Rate decision on 28 October and the Advance GDP and Core PCE Price Index prints on 29 October are published, the drop in gross size this week reads in hindsight as pure risk reduction. The 9 October squeeze thesis would need to be shelved rather than extended again on borrowed time.#
