The positioning read is unambiguous on its own terms. The UST 2Y NOTE's net short among leveraged funds sits at a 97.4th percentile of its three-year range, with a z-score of 1.85. The week to 8 September added another 33,281 contracts to that short rather than trimming it. The desk's own stretch note puts the position at its most crowded since 11 August. This is a book leaning harder into a trade that, judged purely by where yields already sit, is already stretched thin.#
Set that against the 5-year and 10-year notes, where the story runs the other way. Both saw short-covering in the same week: the UST 5Y NOTE's net short shrank by 118,128 contracts, and the UST 10Y NOTE's by 117,707. The z-scores make the split plain. The 5-year short sits at a 1.15 z-score of its three-year range, elevated but retreating. The UST 2Y NOTE sits at 1.85 and still growing. Whatever is driving funds to add duration-short exposure at the front end is not the same force pulling them out of it further along the curve.#
The fed funds futures curve gives that split a mechanism. The market prices the policy rate 60.5 basis points higher in 12 months than the 4.025% implied front rate, a firmer path, not cuts. That pricing sits almost entirely at the front end of the curve, where a 2-year note lives and dies. A leveraged fund short the 2-year is betting the Federal Reserve's path keeps firming from here. The front-end curve is already telling it that this bet is directionally right. The growing short is not fighting the priced path, it is riding it, and that is precisely what makes the position's size the risk rather than the trade itself.#
A short that keeps growing while it sits at a three-year stretch is not obviously wrong, it is simply unhedged against its own crowding.#
The 2-year yield's move to 4.74% carries a velocity of 3.21, an unusually fast climb in FRED's 21-observation window, well beyond the 1.76 velocity on the 10-year over the same span. A move that fast, feeding a short that keeps adding, leaves less room for a reversal to be orderly. If the priced tightening path stalls, or if this week's auctions show the Treasury paying up for 2-year paper into weak demand, the unwind in a position this concentrated could move faster than the position built.#
This week supplies the test directly. The Treasury sells 2-year notes on 22 September, 5-year on 23 September and 7-year on 24 September, into a curve that is inverted at the short end by conventional measures, with the 2s10s spread at just the 1.6th percentile of its own year. A soft 2-year auction, tails and weak bid-to-cover, alongside a yield push through fresh highs would confirm the priced-tightening story and validate the crowded short's direction, even as its size stays the exposure to watch. What would break the read: the 2-year yield trading back below 4.60% in the days after the 22 September auction, which would show the front-end short is over-extended against a policy path that is not firming as fast as fed funds futures currently imply.#
